Explore a different artist, art style or theme each week. Camps include art instruction time, outdoor exploration, time for lunch, yoga, community volunteering, occasional field trips, and play. Each camp also includes tours of the historic neighborhood, led by Slabtown Tours. All camps are taught by professional artists and/or professional educators.  Camps are held at Creative Roots in NW Portland, at 2661 NW Thurman Street, unless noted otherwise.

During our Summer 2016 session we will offer two summer camps each week, one for kids ages 6-9, the other for kids ages 10-13. If you have questions about which camp your child should attend, please contact us.

Week 1: June 13-17

Beatrix Potter, Ages 6-9 – nature art Learn to observe natural details, sketch and water color in the style of Beatrix Potter. Beatrix Potter began illustrating at a very early age by observing animals and landscapes in nature. We will spend time observing outdoors, sketching, reading Beatrix potter stories and trying different ways to create watercolor paintings in this fun and creative camp.

Mindfulness & Yoga Camp
, Ages 10-13 – Develop a yoga and mindfulness practice infused with creativity. We will explore strategies for self-care, stress reduction and wellness practices which pre-teens and teens can take home. Activities will be both indoors and outdoors throughout the week.

Week 2: June 20-June 24

IMG_2727Puppetry I Camp, Ages 6-9 – Design and make your own puppets each day, write your own plays and perform them with your friends at the end of the week puppet showcase. During this camp we will design and make hand puppets including: sock puppets, finger puppets, shadow puppets, paper mâché puppets, and simple marionettes.

Photography, Ages 10-13 –Image 3 Learn how to care for your camera, about the history of photography, understand how to develop film and gain a simple understanding of how to process photos in the digital world. Learn how cameras work (Film and Digital). What makes a good photograph? Develop film with coffee and vitamin C. Use a standard scanner to digitize slides for printing. Each day will include hikes focusing on different subject matter.

 Week 3: June 27-July 1

Sewing Camp, Ages 6-9 – Learn the basics of sewing. Make fragrant animal friends and simple sewing projects throughout the week.

Girls’ Empowerment Camp, Ages 10-13 – IMG_0505Learn life-long leadership skills, including goal setting, perseverance, and communication skills while exploring your “Sparks”, what energizes you and keeps you working at your best. Explore your place in the world! We will explore communication, self-awareness and leadership in this camp through games, challenges, mindfulness and community service. Participants have an opportunity to work together to plan and implement their ideas to take action, engage in community service activities throughout the week, and make a difference.

Week 4: July 5-July 8

Fiber Arts, Forest Hikes & Nature Art Camp, Ages 6-9 – In this summer camp we will study about nature as we work with fiber arts. Learn different fiber art techniques including carding, dyeing, needle felting, embroidery, sewing, weaving and all about where natural fibers come from. This camp will feature different hikes and fiber arts techniques from the Fiber Arts Camp in Week 6, campers who enjoy Fiber Arts will have new skills to learn in each camp.  IMG_2718

Advanced Puppetry Camp, Ages 10-13 – Design and make your own puppets each day, write your own plays and perform them with your friends at the end of the week puppet showcase. We will design and make puppets out of socks, paper mâché, and even create our own marionettes.

 Week 5: July 11-July 15

Puppetry II Camp, Ages 6-9 – During this week of camp we will make more complex hand puppets and marionettes. Design and make your own puppets each day using a variety of art materials, including paper mâché. Write your own plays and perform them with your friends at the end of the week puppet showcase.

floral mandalaHikes & Nature Art, Ages 10-13 – Each day campers will hike in Forest Park.  Hikes include trips up to the Audubon Center to observe birds and nature, hikes to Washington Park and Hoyt Arboretum to sketch, watercolor, create nature art and observe nature.

Week 6: July 18-July 22

Cooking, Ages 6-9 – Learn basic food preparation and cooking techniques.  Leave camp with a recipe book of healthy and delicious snacks to make at home for yourself and your family.

Fairy and Gnome House Maker’s Camp, Ages 8-12 – Campers explore the stories and lore of fairies and gnomes.  Create fairies, gnomes and small characters for storytelling and explore different architectural styles of fairy and gnome homes.  Included in this camp is a mix of creative and expressive arts, architecture, nature studies and lots of time outdoors, including hikes at Forest Park.  Campers will leave with a fairy house of their own to take home.

Week 7: July 25-29

Enchanted Forest Hikes & Fairies Camp, Ages 6-9 – Campers enjoy a relaxing week of nature hikes, observations and fairy house building. Make unique and creative fairy houses to attract fairies to NW Portland, and take home a fairy house to attract fairies to your home.

Week 8: August 1-5

Bubbles, Silly Putty and Slime, Ages 6-9 – Learn about the simple science of every day children’s toys and play materials.  Each day campers will make one or two materials to use for countless hours of fun play time.  Make bubbles the size of a person, silly putty which actually copies print, slime, play doh and more!  Guaranteed hours of playful fun.IMG_2138

Medicinal Plants, Yoga & Hikes, Ages 10-13 – Plants have a deep history of uses for food and medicine. Learn how to identify plants. Tap into their medicinal properties by learning how to make salves and tinctures. Understand how indigenous cultures respected, cultivated, and utilized plants.

Week 9: August 8-12

Roald Dahl: Imagination, Illustration & Book Making, Ages 6-9 – Outdoor adventures around NW Thurman include hikes and nature observations. Campers will enjoy time painting and creating art outdoors, learning about observation, drawing and painting techniques. Campers will learn about Ronald Dahl, read some of his classic stories, and use some of his observation techniques to imagine and create creatures based on the natural world.  Campers will illustrate their own story to take home at the end of the week.IMG_1506

Cooking, Ages 10-13 – Make food for a new menu each day, learn food preparation and cooking techniques and leave with a small cookbook of recipes to make for yourself and your family at home.

Week 10: August 15-19

Enchanted Forest Hikes & Fairies Camp, Ages 6-9 – Campers enjoy a relaxing week of nature hikes, observations and fairy house building. Make unique and creative fairy houses to attract fairies to NW Portland, and take home a fairy house to attract fairies to your home.

IMG_2133Illustration, Ages 10-13 – Learn the basics of illustration using charcoal, chalk pastel, pencil, colored pencil and other drawing media. Learn about perspective, proportion and illustrate a short story or poem.

Mixed Media & Yoga Camp, Ages 6-9 – The last two weeks of Summer Camps at Creative Roots will be a fun and playful mixed media camp and yoga for mixed-age.  Campers will paint, work with clay, create paper mâché projects, work on fiber arts projects and more in a relaxing and child-led learning environment. Campers will also have time for outdoor artwork and take small hikes each day in and around Forest Park.
