Summer Camps 2015

Each Week Through the Summer

9am – 3:30pm  

$225/week

Explore a different artist, art style or theme each week. IMG_2022 Camps include art instruction time, outdoor exploration, time for lunch, yoga, community volunteering, occasional field trips, and play. Each camp also includes tours of the historic neighborhood, led by Mike’s History Tours. All camps are held at Creative Roots in NW Portland, at 2661 NW Thurman Street, unless noted otherwise.

During our Summer 2015 session we will offer two summer camps each week, one for kids ages 6-9, the other for kids ages 10-13. If you have questions about which camp your child should attend, please contact us.

Week 1: June 22-26

Imagination Boxes and Yoga Camp, Ages 6-9 – Explore the art of Joseph CIMG_2357ornell’s imagination boxes. Once a resident of Portland, OR, Cornell was inspired by both the world around him, and our internal world. Cornell’s artwork is featured in the Smithsonian, creative works of art using boxes to create 3-D collage. This creative camp will also feature Yoga Calm® curriculum to further explore creativity, communication, the natural world and self-awareness.  Taught by Monique.

IMG_2133Leonardo da Vinci: Engineering Camp, Ages 10-13 – Learn about the science and the art of Leonardo da Vinci’s work. We will study and re-create some of da Vinci’s models, learn new drawing skills, and maybe invent something of our own!  Taught by Jason Botel.

Week 2: June 29-July 3

IMG_2727Puppetry I Camp, Ages 6-9 – Design and make your own puppets each day, write your own plays and perform them with your friends at the end of the week puppet showcase. During this camp we will design and make hand puppets including: sock puppets, finger puppets, shadow puppets, paper mâché puppets, and simple marionettes.  Taught by Monique.

Makers’ Camp:  Creativity of of 19th Century Inventors, Ages 10-13 – Learn about the creative geniusIMG_2142 of 19th Century inventors including:  Thomas Edison, Hall Braille, George Eastman, Jesse Reno, Alexander Graham Bell, James Naismith, Jean Foucault, Samuel Fox, Sarah Goode, Whitcomb Judson, Lewis Latimer, Guglielmo Marconi, Theophilus Van Kannel, Wilhelm Konrad von Roentgen and Joseph Gayetty.  From toilet paper to zippers to the telephone and Braille, these amazing inventors were able to create and produce ideas which revolutionized societies.  Explore the science of their engineering and create your own models and unique creations throughout the week.  Taught by Alice Cotton.

 Week 3: July 6-July 10

Sewing Camp: Lavender Eye Pillows & Animal Friends Camp, Ages 6-9 – Learn the basics of sewing. Make fragrant animal friends and/or eye pillows to take home.  Taught by Heidi Mann of The Forest Friends.

Girls’ Empowerment Camp: Community Service and Leadership, Ages 10-13 – IMG_0505Learn life-long leadership skills, including goal setting, perseverance, and communication skills while exploring your “Sparks”, what energizes you and keeps you working at your best. Explore your place in the world! We will explore communication, self-awareness and leadership in this camp through games, challenges, mindfulness and community service. Participants have an opportunity to work together to plan and implement their ideas to take action, engage in community service activities throughout the week, and make a difference.  Taught by Emily Fitzgerald.

Week 4: July 13-July 17

Fiber Arts, Forest Hikes & Nature Art Camp, Ages 6-9 – In this summer camp we will study about nature as we work with fiber arts. Learn different fiber art techniques including carding, dyeing, needle felting, embroidery, sewing, weaving and all about where natural fibers come from. This camp will feature different hikes and fiber arts techniques from the Fiber Arts Camp in Week 6, campers who enjoy Fiber Arts will have new skills to learn in each camp.  Taught by Heidi Mann of The Forest FriendsIMG_2718.

Advanced Puppetry Camp, Ages 10-13 – Design and make your own puppets each day, write your own plays and perform them with your friends at the end of the week puppet showcase. We will design and make puppets out of socks, paper mâché, and even create our own marionettes.  Taught by Shuhe Hawkins.

 Week 5: July 20-July 24

Puppetry II Camp, Ages 6-9 – During this week of camp we will make more complex hand puppets and marionettes. Design and make your own puppets each day using a variety of art materials, including paper mâché. Write your own plays and perform them with your friends at the end of the week puppet showcase. Taught by Heidi Mann of The Forest Friends.

Girls’ Empowerment Camp: Relaxation and Self Care, Lavender Eye Pillows & Essential Oils, Ages 10-13 – Learn life-long leadership skills, including goal setting, testimonial-4-circleperseverance, and communication skills while exploring your “Sparks”, what energizes you and keeps you working at your best. Explore your place in the world! Learn how to sew or use your skills to make lavender eye pillows, and explore nature and make essential oil. We will explore communication, self-awareness and leadership in this camp through games, challenges, mindfulness and community service. Participants have an opportunity to work together to plan and implement their ideas to take action, engage in community service activities throughout the week, and make a difference.  Taught by Emily Fitzgerald.

Week 6: July 27-July 31

Fiber Arts, City Hikes & Nature Art Camp, Ages 6-9 – In this summer camp we will study about nature as we work with fiber arts. Fairy and Gnome House Maker’s Camp, Ages 8-12 – Campers explore the stories and lore of fairies and gnomes.  Create fairies, gnomes and small characters for storytelling and explore different architectural styles of fairy and gnome homes.  Included in this camp is a mix of creative and expressive arts, architecture, nature studies and lots of time outdoors, including hikes at Forest Park.  Campers will leave with a fairy house of their own to take home.  Taught by Jason Botel.

Week 7: August 3-7Image 1

Week 8: August 10-14

Bubbles, Silly Putty and Slime, Ages 6-9 – Learn about the simple science of every day children’s toys and play materials.  Each day campers will make one or two materials to use for countless hours of fun play time.  Make bubbles the size of a person, silly putty which actually copies print, slime, play doh and more!  Guaranteed hours of playful fun.  Taught by Jason Botel.

Photography Camp, Ages 10-13 – Learn how to care for your camera, how about theImage 3 history of photography, understand how to develop film and gain a simple understanding of how to process photos in the digital world. Learn how to observe and take photos which capture the world around you, and also reflect your inner world – your passions, your interests and your own self-image.  Taught by Emily Fitzgerald.

Week 9: August 17-21

Beatrix Potter and Nature-Based Art Camp, Ages 6-9 – Outdoor adventures around NW Thurman include hikes and nature observations. Campers will enjoy time painting and creating art outdoors, learning about observation, drawing and painting techniques. Campers will learn about Beatrix Potter, read some of her classic stories, and use some of her observation techniques to record observations in nature.  Taught by Heidi Mann of The Forest Friends.

Advanced Photography Camp, Ages 10-13 – For campers who have taken the first photography IMG_2138
camp, or who have prior experience with photography. Campers learn about how to take portraits, nature landscapes and use photography as documentary to tell a story.  Taught by Emily Fitzgerald

Week 10: August 24-28

Nature’s Engineers Makers’ Camp, Ages 10-13 – Observe how the elements and wild animal life both
shape the environment of our natural world.  Explore inventions which have been made using natural forces of nature and design your own machines based on your observations.  This camp is taught by Jason Botel.
