No School Art Days Camps 2015-2015

Creative Roots offers camps on days off from school. Most of our camps are offered based on the Portland Public School Calendar and we are adding more camps for families attending schools on different calendars.

Camps are from 8:30am-4:30pm at Creative Roots, 2661 NW Thurman Street. Lunches are available, if requested at registration. The cost of each camp is $75/day, with a discount available when registering for multiple camp programs. Please click on the button below for more details on pricing.

October 9 – Broadway Musical Masks – Make masks inspired by Broadway musicals The Lion King, Cats, Jungle Book and more!

October 21-23 – Traditional Mask Making – Learn about and make masks inspired by traditional native masks and headdresses from around the world. Learn how masks are used in cultures around the world, carnivals and theater, and comedy/tragedy.

October 30 – Comedy & Tragedy Masks – Learn about comedy and tragedy masks, exploring the Yin and Yang of emotions and cultural symbols.

November 11 – Wood Totems – Learn about Native totem structures and their use in storytelling and identify formation. Explore symbolism and create your own totem structures out of wood.

Thanksgiving Break – November 23-25 – Open Art Studio & Handiwork – Use your favorite art media for creative expression at this fun camp. Students who would like to make moccasins and Native American style tapestries will learn how to make these items by hand.

November 27 – Clay Totems – Learn about Native totem structures and their use in storytelling and identify formation. Explore symbolism and create your own totem structures out of clay.

December 21-24 – Theater Winter Break Creative Camp – Week 1 – Learn simple acting techniques including storytelling, expression of emotions, communication and performance. Write a short script by yourself or with a group of friends and perform it at the end of the week. Each day we will experience cooperative activities and create a variety of arts projects, play outside at Wallace Park, participate in community service activities in the NW Portland area, and take a tour to learn about the NW Portland neighborhoods with Slabtown History Tours. Ages 5-12.

December 28-31 – Puppetry Winter Break Creative Camp – Week 2 – Make a wide variety of puppets in this camp ranging from hand puppets to marionettes. Learn new skills in puppetry making from professional puppeteers. Each day we will make puppets, experience cooperative activities and create a variety of arts projects, play outside at Wallace Park, participate in community service activities in the NW Portland area, and take a tour to learn about the NW Portland neighborhoods with Slabtown History Tours. Ages 5-12.

January 18 – World Cultures & Diversity– Learn about the geography and explore some of the native cultures of African countries. Inspired by Martin Luther King Day, this camp will support kids to gain appreciation for cultural art from around the world, and how those cultures have influenced American Culture. We will explore music, dance and art of native African countries.

January 25 – World Cultures & Diversity – Learn about the geography and explore native cultures of South America. Inspired by Martin Luther King Day, this camp will support kids to gain appreciation for cultural art from around the world, and how those cultures have influenced American Culture. We will explore music, dance and art of several native South American countries.

February 12 – Poetry Workshop

February 15 – Gratitude & Poetry – Explore a variety of bookmaking styles and make your own books. Kids will read and write poetry to express gratitude.

March 21-25 – Fairy & Gnome Architecture – Spring Break Camp – Offered in partnership with Saturday Academy®, this fun camp will be offered at Creative Roots. Learn about architecture and the tiny world of fairies and gnomes. Design your own miniature homes and invite the magical world of fairies and gnomes to come to life during this camp.

March 21-25 – All Around This World Cultural Camp – Spring Break Camp– Sing, dance and create with music from All Around This World®. Explore instruments, rhythms, dance, art and cultures from around the world in the fun-filled cultural music camp. Each day we will experience cooperative movement activities and create a variety of arts projects, play outside at Wallace Park, participate in community service activities in the NW Portland area, and take a tour to learn about the NW Portland neighborhoods with Slabtown History Tours. Ages 5-12.

March 28-April 1 – Leonardo da Vinci Camp

April 8 -Gnomes and Fairies – Explore Forest Park, build fairy houses, make fairies and gnomes in this fun camp. If Fairy’s aren’t really your child’s interest, there will be plenty of opportunities to explore and express their imaginative ideas in this camp!

April 20 – Ethnobotany of Forest Park
